About UsGeorge A. Thoma Funeral Home, Inc. was founded and open in 1958 by George A. Thoma. Since that time, we have been providing continuous service to families in Wexford and across the North Hills. Our property has a fascinating history. During the middle of the 20th century, the stretch of Route 19/Perry Highway that's now familiar to Wexford residents and visitors as the busy Wexford flats, lined with stores, car dealerships and other businesses, was largely farmland. In fact, the land on which our funeral home is now located was previously a farm owned by the Michaels family. At one point, a carpenter named Joseph Goetz built a house on the Michaels' property, and the new structure, beautifully made with Italian-cut stone, served as home to Mr. Goetz, his wife and their 14 children. Some years later, Mr. Goetz sold the house to a man named John Murray, and in 1957, Mr. Murray sold the house to George Thoma. In 1958, Mr. Thoma opened his first funeral home. For many years it was the only funeral home in the Wexford area. Mr. Thoma served families in the community as a licensed funeral director, assisted by his wife, Catherine, who greeted families, answered phone calls and handled other clerical and supportive duties. In 1997, Peggy Thoma, daughter of George and Catherine, was licensed as a funeral director and began working in the family business. When Mr. Thoma became sick, Peggy, who had been raised in the business, took over management of the home. After Mr. Thoma passed away in 2008, Peggy became the funeral home's supervisor and has held that title since.Today, nearly 60 years later, we are pleased to continue Mr. Thoma's legacy.
